The Retinal Acuity Meter RAM is a new visual asessment device that accurately measures macular function in eyes with cataract, macular disease, and glaucoma, and forecasts post-operative acuity prior to cataract surgery. It is hand-held, fits into a pocket, and is used in conjunction with a multi-perforated pinhole disc. RAM® testing is fast and easy for patients. It is the first potential vision test to accurately measure central acuity in eyes with glaucomatous field loss. The test is essential for predicting postoperative acuity prior to cataract surgery (predicts within 2 lines in 95% and within 1 line in 85% when preoperative acuity is better than 20/200) or YAG laser capsulotomy (predicts postoperative acuity to within 1 lines in 97% and within 2 lines in 100% of eyes when the preoperative acuity is better than 20/200.)
- Validated for measuring retinal acuity in eyes with cataract, maculopathy and glaucoma.
- Prevents unwarranted surgery when the macula appears normal but the retinal acuity is poor!
- Most accurate retinal acuity measurement.
- Most convenient potential acuity test.
- Saves time evaluating retinal function-quick 1 minute exam.
- Macula or Cataract: Quickly establishes the source of vision loss.

| The ability of the RAM® to measure retinal acuity in the presence of media opacity depends on three optical principles: (1) a clearly focused image, (2) visual angle, and (3) bright illumination. The pinhole aperture places the eye at almost universal focus and an added 2.5 diopter lens improves focusing at the testing distance of 16 inches. The visual angle is calculated for letters read at 16 inches. The bright illumination drives the images through pinhole passages in the lens opacities and more than compensates for the light attenuation by the small aperture pinhole. |
